REV. JOSEPH NEE SIMA then came forward and spoke in broken English, substantially as follows :

In the last parting of our Saviour with His disciples He commanded them to teach all nations and baptize them in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Hence this gospel is given to all nations. To my sorrow I have found a small number who have abused the great gift from on high. But to you who have been willing to show your gifts with others less favored I am indebted for all that I am or expect to be. Without you I should be a heathen and my country still unsaved. I beg of you who have so much to let the crumbs fall from your loaded tables. If you will the world will be soon filled and saved from spiritual starvation.

My country has not more than three hundred students to be educated but some of them have fallen into the hands of Europeans −−− most of them infidels. I believe a nation cannot exist as a nation with simply education ; it must have spiritual sustenance to feed upon. She is only seven months old −−− your youngest daughter and sister, but she has self-supporting churches, and worthy to bear the name of the mother church. In Japan native Christians must have a good education or they would be left behind by our countrymen. A training school should be opened where teachers can be trained for the work.

It is embarrassing to beg, but we cannot get any money without it, −−− and Jesus said,“Ask and ye shall receive me!”I therefore ask you to start a Christian institution in Japan. You can save thirty million souls from going down to infidelity −−− I will not sit down unless you promise to help me. (Applause.)

Hon. Peter Parker here announced he would give $\$ 1,000$ , and Hon. W. E. Dodge and Col. L. G. Hammond quickly followed with the same amount each ; received with hearty applause. A lady from Vermont announced $\$ 100$ , and another lady from Massachusetts was announced for $\$ 50$ more.

The speaker continued : I was very restless last night, but think I can sleep well to-night. I am strong enough to carry $\$ 10000000!\mathrm { ~ I ~ }$ have been nine years in this country, have seen your prosperity and I believe it came from God and your power from Christian religion.

A lady from Rhode Island then contributed $\$ 100$ , and Gov. Page, of Rutland, stepped forward and pledged a $\$ 1,000$ .

My heart is filled with joy, and I cannot say much more. It is exceeding painful to part with so many friends.

By request the speaker then repeated the Lord’s prayer in the Japanese language.

W. E. Dodge)與L.
